It is attributed to an age of 5000 years and is considered the oldest city in America, as it is not So far, another older site with such a diversity of monumental buildings has been found on this continent, with different ceremonial and administrative functions. Since Sr Paul Kosok discovered the site about three hours north of Lima in 1948, the site has continued to surprise the scientific community, as it shows that Caral’s civilization was quite advanced in medicine, engineering, climatology, and the agronomy. In agreement with the archeologist Ruth Shady, Caral was designed to take advantage of the wind, channeling it through underground conduits to reach high temperatures through bonfires, which is known as the Venturi effect. This effect was discovered in 1740, but the Norte Chico knew about it almost 5,000 years ago. The site also includes laboratories where climatic events were projected and agricultural schedules were elaborated. Caral seems to have been used as a model for the urban design of the Andean civilizations in the following four millennia after its construction, and is the key to understanding the development of the first cities of the continent. Among the articles found in Caral is the Quipu, a data-recording instrument that involves knots tied in ropes. Although it is known that the Incas used the quipus, the researchers did not know that the system was so old, until the discovery of Caral. Other relics discovered in the area include many flutes made of condor bones and pelicans, horns made of deer and llama bones, and shicras, bags made of fiber from plants and used to carry the stones that were used for construction. From the temples, the scientists were provided with the perfect material for accurate carbon dating, allowing them to realize the real age of the site.
