At dawn, you will depart from Arequipa to ascend into the Andean heights.
The first stop will be in Chivay, the capital of Caylloma Province and the main gateway to Colca Canyon. This journey takes approximately 3 hours and follows an asphalt road with several slopes and curves.
Before beginning your tourist visits in Colca Canyon and Valley, you will enjoy a delicious continental breakfast in Chivay. If you are vegetarian, don’t worry, there are suitable options for your dietary preferences.
Please remember that Chivay is a high-altitude town. Its elevation of 3,635 meters above sea level is a good reason to be cautious during breakfast. Digestion is slower here, and overeating could cause discomfort.
Watching the Andean condor soar and glide is one of nature’s great spectacles. That’s why the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint, just an hour by bus from Chivay, is such an astonishing, magical, and inspiring place.
From this viewpoint, you can also admire the depth of the canyon and the mountains that stretch into the horizon. The experience is further enhanced by closely observing the traveler’s route, which offers picturesque views.
After an hour of marveling at the depth of Colca Canyon from the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint, you will set out to explore other vistas of the canyon and valley at Antahuilque and Wayrapunku. These are two magnificent viewpoints in the Andean geography.
At both viewpoints, you’ll gain different perspectives of the canyon carved by the Colca River and the pre-Hispanic agricultural terraces, known as andenerías, where descendants of the Collagua and Cabana peoples—indigenous communities—continue to sow and harvest crops.
The banks of the Colca Valley are dotted with a string of rural villages where tranquility reigns and a sense of the past permeates the air. This is exactly what you’ll find in Maca, the next stop on your full-day journey connecting to Puno.
In this village, you’ll visit the Church of Santa Ana, one of the jewels of colonial and religious architecture in the valley. Constructed from ashlar stone in the Churrigueresque style, the church serves as a meeting point with the local population, who uphold ancient customs and traditions.
Hot springs and much more await you at this strategic stop, where you’ll have an hour to bathe in the volcanic-origin pools of Chacapi, or, if you prefer, add one or more doses of adventure and adrenaline to your full day.
Canopy tours, kayaking, and ATV rides are optional activities available in the surroundings of the baths. These services are provided by local operators and are not included in the tour cost. Keep this in mind!
On the route, time flies. It’s time to return to Chivay from Chacapi, the hot springs located on the outskirts of Yanque, another charming village in the Colca Valley that boasts a beautiful colonial church.
Stay alert on the journey so you can continue to enjoy the diverse nuances of Colca, a destination that encompasses nature, history, culture, tradition, and also good cuisine, as you will experience during lunch.
The adventure of traveling stirs up an appetite. Chivay is the chosen place for lunch. If you’re unsure about which place to choose, don’t worry, our guide will recommend the buffet at a tourist restaurant. Remember that lunch is not included.
If the suggestion doesn’t appeal to you, our guide will present other options so that your lunch—scheduled for 12:00 noon—is delightful, leaving you with a great memory of Colca cuisine. Here, you’ll find more than one traditional dish worth trying.
After lunch (around 13:00 hours), your guide will accompany you to the bus station in Chivay, where you will board the bus headed to Puno. You will arrive in Puno after a journey of approximately 19 hours.
Please note that in this full-day tour, there will be passengers returning to Arequipa on the same outbound bus. However, you will continue your journey to Puno on a different bus.
If you think six hours is too long and you’ll get bored on the journey, you’re completely mistaken. On your trip to Puno and the legendary Lake Titicaca, you’ll witness volcanoes, herds of alpacas, and groups of vicuñas in their natural habitat.
Along the route, there are three viewpoints. The Andes offers views of the snow-capped peaks of Ampato, Sabancaya, Hualca Hualca, Mismi, and the Chila mountain range. Patahuasi is ideal for spotting alpacas and vicuñas, while Lagunillas features a series of small lakes.
By nightfall (approximately 19:30 hours), you will arrive in the city of Puno. Our service will conclude at your hotel or accommodation, provided it is located in the Historic Center of the “High Plateau City”.
If you booked a private tour, don’t worry. We will take you to your hotel no matter where it is located. A good night’s sleep will help you acclimate to the altitude of Puno (3,827 meters above sea level).
