Tour to Pillones Waterfall and Stone Forest
- 10k reviews 10 h
A tour where you’ll explore the high Andean landscapes of the Salinas Aguada Blanca National Reserve, a protected natural area featuring plains and volcanoes on the horizon, with forests of queuña and yareta (two native species), wild vicuñas grazing freely, and flocks of resident and migratory birds.
This journey takes you away from the serene white city of Arequipa to delve into the rugged Andean geography and breathe the crisp mountain air. As you approach the rushing waters of Pillones waterfall, you’ll witness the Imata stone forest.
The proposal is laid out. All that’s left is for you to decide to join our tour. We’re confident you’ll have a great time exploring the forest and waterfall.

It’s the perfect place to observe wild vicuñas, the fine South American camelid represented in the coat of arms of Peru. Timid and easily frightened, it’s important to avoid getting too close so as not to disturb them. Remember, we are intruders in their habitat.
In Pampa Cañahuas — two hours from Arequipa — there are not only vicuñas. In this realm of ichu grass (high-altitude grass), you’ll have exceptional views of the Chachani and Misti volcanoes. So, get your camera ready to capture the best shots.
After satisfying your wanderlust with sightings of vicuñas and the volcanic views of Chachani and Misti, our tour transport will head towards Patahuasi, the chosen spot for breakfast.
Due to the rural nature of Patahuasi, breakfast options are basic. You can expect items like coca tea, coffee, tea, fruits, cereals, and so forth as part of the simple menu.
Time to walk! You’ll spend an hour strolling through the pampas, very close to the Arequipa-Juliaca-Puno highway, letting your imagination run wild as you play at finding shapes in the gigantic stones sculpted by wind and rain erosion.
Of volcanic origin, the stones of Imata showcase the geological evolution of the highlands and the creative force of nature, which has “chiseled” strange and whimsical shapes into the megalithic blocks of Imata.
Water on the pampas. Water at 4600 m.a.s.l. Water cascading from a height of 10 meters, eroding with the assistance of air, the walls of volcanic rock found in this section of the Salinas Aguada Blanca National Reserve.
In this place, there is also the possibility of observing vizcachas, a South American rodent that blends in with the rocks. With a bit of luck, you might capture a photograph and take home a beautiful image of Andean fauna.
We will take you to Patahuasi so you can enjoy a local lunch.
Please note that you won’t find sophisticated meals or gourmet options due to the characteristics and location of this high-altitude place.
Remember that the cost of lunch is not included in our service.
After the simple yet comforting lunch in Patahuasi, we will return to Arequipa.
Our tour transport will take you back to the Historic Centre, very close to the Plaza de Armas, where you can easily return to your accommodation.
The approximate end time of the tour is 16:30.
